Serengeti vs. Masai Mara: Which is better for a safari?

Serengeti and Masai Mara are both outstanding. The better choice depends on season, budget, route, and whether your trip is Tanzania-focused or Kenya-focused.

Serengeti vs. Masai Mara: Which is better for a safari?

Detailed answer

The Serengeti is larger and offers a huge range of Tanzania safari routes, from central plains to Ndutu, western corridors, and northern river areas. It pairs naturally with Ngorongoro, Tarangire, Lake Manyara, and Zanzibar.

The Masai Mara is smaller but very productive for wildlife, especially when combined with a Kenya itinerary. It can be excellent for big cats and migration viewing when herds are in the Mara area.

If your dream is Tanzania, choose Serengeti. If your route is Kenya-based, choose Masai Mara. If time and budget allow, a cross-border itinerary can include both.

Quick planning notes

  • Choose Serengeti for a Tanzania northern circuit safari
  • Choose Masai Mara for a Kenya-focused itinerary
  • Migration location changes by season
  • Both are excellent for big cats and open plains
