Must-Have Items Before You Travel

Start with these essentials first. They are the most important items for safety, comfort, and smooth travel before thinking about smaller extras.

Best Packing Rule

Pack for the coldest night, not the warmest day. Kilimanjaro begins in warmer lower zones but summit night can be freezing, windy, and physically demanding.

1. Documents and Money

Keep travel documents in a waterproof pouch and carry digital copies on your phone or email.

2. Bags and Packing Organization

Your porter carries the main duffel while you carry the daypack. Use waterproof liners so clothes stay dry if it rains.

3. Clothing Layer System

Use synthetic or merino layers. Avoid cotton for trekking because it holds sweat and becomes cold at altitude.

4. Footwear

Good boots and socks help prevent blisters. Test everything before the trip, especially your boots.

5. Head, Hands and Face

The face, ears, and hands are exposed to sun, dust, wind, and cold. Bring protection for both hot trekking days and freezing summit night.

6. Sleeping and Camp Comfort

Cold nights are normal on Kilimanjaro. A warm sleeping setup helps you rest and recover between trekking days.

7. Daypack Items

These items stay with you during the walking day. Your main duffel is usually carried separately by the porter team.

8. Health and Toiletries

Keep toiletries simple, light, and practical. Speak with a doctor before travel about altitude, vaccines, and personal medication.

9. Electronics and Useful Extras

Bring only what you need. Keep electronics protected from dust, rain, and cold.

10. Summit Night Checklist

Prepare these before sleeping at base camp. Summit night is cold, dark, and slow, so everything should be ready and easy to find.

01

Wear Full Layers

Thermal base layers, fleece, insulated jacket, waterproof shell, trekking pants, rain pants, warm hat, balaclava, gloves, and mittens.

02

Protect Water

Carry water bottles or an insulated system. Keep water close to your body where possible so it is easier to drink in freezing conditions.

03

Prepare Light and Snacks

Use fresh headlamp batteries and pack quick snacks such as energy bars, chocolate, gels, or sweets for easy fuel.

11. Rent or Leave Behind

Some bulky items can be rented locally, while unnecessary items add weight and make packing harder.

Safari FAQ

Tanzania Safari Questions & Answers

Quick answers for travelers planning a private, group, family, luxury, midrange, or Zanzibar-connected safari with Njiro Legacy Safaris.

How much does a Tanzania safari cost?

The cost of a Tanzania safari depends on the number of days, parks visited, accommodation level, season, and whether the safari is private or group joining. Njiro Legacy Safaris can prepare budget, midrange, and luxury safari options based on your travel dates and group size.

Can I customize my safari?

Yes. All private safaris can be customized. You can choose the number of days, parks, accommodation style, airport transfers, Zanzibar extension, Kilimanjaro add-on, or special activities such as a balloon safari or cultural visit.

Is the safari private or shared?

We offer both private safaris and group joining safaris. Private safaris give you your own vehicle and driver-guide, while group joining safaris are shared with other travelers and can be more budget-friendly.

Can I start my safari from Zanzibar?

Yes. We can arrange safari packages starting from Zanzibar with domestic flights to Arusha, Kilimanjaro, or Serengeti, depending on the itinerary. We can also arrange a safari first and Zanzibar beach holiday afterward.

What is the best month for the Serengeti migration?

The Serengeti migration can be seen in different areas depending on the month. January to March is best for the Ndutu calving season. June to October is best for the dry season and river crossing areas, especially Northern Serengeti and Kogatende.

Do I need travel insurance?

Yes. We strongly recommend travel insurance for all travelers. It should cover medical emergencies, trip cancellation, baggage loss, flight delays, and safari-related travel interruptions.

What type of vehicle do you use?

We use 4x4 safari Land Cruisers with pop-up roofs for game viewing. The vehicles are designed for safari roads and provide good visibility for photography and wildlife viewing.

Are airport transfers included?

Airport transfers can be included depending on the safari package or quote. We can arrange pickup and drop-off from Kilimanjaro International Airport, Arusha Airport, or your hotel in Arusha.

Can children join the safari?

Yes. Children can join Tanzania safaris. We can prepare family-friendly itineraries with comfortable driving distances, suitable lodges, flexible timing, and activities that work well for families.

How much should I tip the safari guide?

Tipping is not compulsory but is appreciated. A common guideline is USD 10-20 per person per day for the safari guide, depending on group size and satisfaction with the service.
