Tansania Travel Health

Tansania-Impfleitfaden fuer Safari, Zanzibar und Kilimanjaro

Prepare for your Tansania trip with a simple overview of required vaccines, recommended travel shots, malaria prevention, and what to check before you fly.

Yellow Fever

Required only if arriving from or transiting through a yellow fever risk country.

Malaria

No vaccine for most Reisende; ask your doctor about tablets and mosquito protection.

Timing

Visit a travel clinic 4-8 weeks before travel when possible.

Proof

Keep your yellow fever certificate with your passport if you are required to have it.

Are vaccinations mandatory for Tansania?

For most Reisende arriving directly from the USA, UK, EU, Canada, Australia, and many other countries, Tansania does not require special vaccinations for entry.

The key exception is yellow fever. A yellow fever vaccination certificate may be required if you are arriving from, or have transited for a long period through, a country with yellow fever risk.

Always confirm your route, transit airports, and health requirements before departure. Rules may depend on your full travel history, not only your passport.

Vaccines Reisende commonly discuss with a doctor

Conditional

Yellow Fever

Required for Reisende coming from yellow fever risk countries. A single dose is generally considered long-lasting protection.

Recommended

Hepatitis A

Often recommended for travel because it can spread through contaminated food or water.

Recommended

Typhoid

Commonly recommended for Reisende eating outside major hotels or visiting rural areas.

Routine

Routine Vaccines

Check that routine vaccines such as tetanus, diphtheria, polio, MMR, and flu are up to date.

Trip Based

Hepatitis B

May be recommended depending on length of stay, medical exposure, or personal risk factors.

Trip Based

Rabies

Consider for long stays, remote travel, children, or Reisende likely to be around animals.

Malaria precautions for Tansania

Malaria exists in parts of Tansania, especially lower-altitude and warmer regions. Safari areas, coastal zones, and Zanzibar may require mosquito precautions.

Speak with a travel medicine professional about whether antimalarial tablets are suitable for your itinerary. Also use insect repellent, long sleeves in the evening, and mosquito nets where available.

  • Use Repellent

Choose a strong mosquito repellent and apply it especially from late afternoon onward.

  • Cover Up

Wear long sleeves and trousers in the evening when mosquitoes are more active.

When should you visit a travel clinic?

1 8 weeks before

Best time to review vaccines, malaria tablets, and existing health conditions.

2 4 weeks before

Still enough time for many vaccines and travel health planning.

3 Last minute

Still ask a doctor. Some protection and advice may still be useful.

Vaccination questions Reisende ask

If you arrive directly from a non-risk country, it is usually not required. If you arrive from or transit through a yellow fever risk country, proof may be requested.
Children should be up to date with routine vaccines. A travel doctor can advise on typhoid, hepatitis A, rabies, and malaria prevention based on age and itinerary.
Requirements can change. Check airline, transit, and Tansania entry updates before travel. Many Reisende still choose to stay updated with routine protection.
Carry your passport, travel insurance, vaccination certificate if required, prescription medicines, mosquito repellent, sunscreen, and a small personal medical kit.
